Long time no blog

It's been more than two years since our last blog post. That's not such a long time right? Except it is, at least in our world.

We sold our condo in Santa Monica, had a baby, quit our jobs, moved to Chicago, bought a new car and.... turned 30! Gulp. But things are good, really good.  I miss work, sometimes, and we miss our friends and the weather in California, but we pretty much love our new life in Chicago.

Living in the city has been amazing. We walk everywhere. Calvin and i have made so many new friends. We do lots of really cool things every day. We like our neighbors. We like our neighborhood. We like our apartment. Even the cats are happier here!

So now that we're settled in, I'm coming off hiatus for real. I'll post what i can when i can and go from there. It's good to be back :)

Illegal phone usage

There is now a law in California that you cannot use your cellphone while driving unless you have a hands-free device of some kind. The law went into effect over the summer and for the most part people seem to be complying. And when they don't, it's really easy to pick them out on the road, since they are always the car that's going as slow as a snail. Well today i found myself going as slow as a snail on the 405 (one of LA's major freeways), but not because i was talking on my cell phone... no, i was stuck in a traffic jam, so i decided to take this picture:

This is the "After" picture of a fire that started at 1 am this morning in the hills that the 405 passes through (known as the Sepulveda pass).  Those little yellow things that are crawling all over the hillside are firefighters!

Now for the "Before" picture (taken by news people i assume, as i was safely sleeping at home when the fire started):

Um, gulp. Yes, that is the very same hillside i drove past this morning... pretty scary stuff. Thank goodness we have amazing firefighters who were able to put the fire out by the time i had to commute. They even managed to keep the fire contained so that no homes or business were damaged, and even more importantly, no people were hurt. My hats off to you LAFD!

I've died and gone to ice cream heaven

Nate hurt his ankle somehow this past weekend and had to go to the doctor to get checked out. In my family, going to the doctor means getting ice cream afterward, so when we went to fill nate's prescription we obviously upheld the tradition! Behold, my completely unexpected new favorite ice cream flavor: Haagen Dazs White Chocolate Raspberry TruffleThe raspberry is tangy and not too sweet, the chocolate is rich and very soft (not hard like the usual chocolate chunks that are in ice cream) and the 'white chocolate' ice cream tastes like a mild creamy vanilla... It's basically amazing! (It may even be better than the Peppermint Stick  ice cream i get every holiday season at Every Day's a Sundae in Downers Grove.... And that's saying something)

Chomp!

Coming soon to an office near you...
I'm definitely going to be baking these in the near future, though in my version there will be a Ms. Pac Man and also Cherries.

Whoo-hoo!?!

No more whoo-hoo in WaMu.
Yep, our bank failed today.
I love being an adult.
(That's right little boy, let's play hide-and-seek! Oh wait, are they just playing peek-a-boo? with our money? It's all fun and games until the bank goes and fails.... i mean seriously, that's the picture they choose to reassure me that it's totally business as usual.... sigh)
